Η ύπνωση (trance) είναι μια φυσική, διαφοροποιημένη από το σύνηθες, κατάσταση συνειδητότητας που περιλαμβάνει αυξημένη συγκέντρωση, μειωμένη προσοχή σε περιφερειακά ζητήματα και αυξημένη ικανότητα απόκρισης σε απόκρισης σε προτάσεις και οδηγίες. Είναι μια διαδικασία που συμβαίνει φυσικά, αρκετά συχνά, αλλά που οι περισσότεροι άνθρωποι δεν έχουν μάθει να την αναγνωρίζουν: όταν η προσοχή μας είναι απολύτως συγκεντρωμένη σε ένα θέμα, και ο υπόλοιπος κόσμος γύρω μοιάζει να χάνει τη σημασία του προσωρινά (πχ όταν ακούμε ένα "ιδιαίτερο" τραγούδι, όταν ονειροπολούμε ή βλέπουμε μια ταινία που μας καθηλώνει), και η γύρω πραγματικότητα σχεδόν "εξαφανίζεται", τότε βρισκόμαστε σε μια μορφή ύπνωσης. Βέβαια, η κατάσταση αυτή δεν αλλάζει (παρά μόνο προσωρινά) τα προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζουμε, αν και πολλές φορές μας βοηθάει πρόσκαιρα να νιώσουμε καλύτερα, πχ όταν ακούμε μουσική, ή βλέπουμε μια ταινία για να ξεχαστούμε. Η ύπνωση (hypnosis) είναι η διαδικασία που ακολουθούμε προκειμένου να μπούμε στην κατάσταση που περιγράφεται παραπάνω, για θεραπευτικούς, ψυχαγωγικούς ή άλλους λόγους.
Κλινική ύπνωση ή υπνοθεραπεία λέγεται η διαδικασία της ύπνωσης υπό καθοδήγηση, προκειμένου να βρούμε και να επιλύσουμε προβλήματα που έχουν βάση στο υποσυνείδητο, για θεραπευτικούς δηλαδή σκοπούς. Πρόκειται για μια εναλλακτική θεραπεία που έχει τις ρίζες της αιώνες πριν, και που τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει γνωρίσει τεράστια ανάπτυξη χάρη στην ανάπτυξη της ψυχολογίας, της ψυχιατρικής και της νευροεπιστήμης. Ενώ λοιπόν η χρήση της ύπνωσης είναι γνωστή εδώ και αιώνες, μόλις από τα μέσα του εικοστού αιώνα άρχισε η συστηματική ιατρική και επιστημονική μελέτη και η χρήση της ως θεραπευτικό εργαλείο σε μια πληθώρα παθήσεων. Η ενασχόληση της σύγχρονης επιστήμης με το φαινόμενο της ύπνωσης και η ανάπτυξη της υπνοθεραπείας μας έχει δώσει μια επιστημονική μεθοδολογία και μια πολύ καλύτερη, πιο ολοκληρωμένη και στέρεη εικόνα του τί συμβαίνει και γιατί στον εγκέφαλο, όσο βρίσκεται σε αυτή την κατάσταση.
Συμβαίνει συχνά η παρανόηση να θεωρείται το ασυνείδητο ως μια σκοτεινή πλευρά του εαυτού, γεμάτη πράγματα που καλό είναι να αποφεύγει. Πρόκειται για μια ξεπερασμένη προσέγγιση των αρχών του 20ού αιώνα, βασισμένη κυρίως στο έργο του Φρόιντ. Στην πραγματικότητα, λέει η σύγχρονη νευροεπιστήμη, το ασυνείδητο είναι οργανικό κομμάτι του εαυτού μας, το μεγαλύτερο κομμάτι της επεξεργαστικής ισχύος του εγκεφάλου μας, που ασχολείται με τα πάντα για όσα δεν είναι απαραίτητη η συνειδητή προσπάθεια. Για παράδειγμα, όση ώρα διαβάζεις αυτές τις γραμμές, το συνειδητό σου είναι απασχολημένο με το να αναγνώσει το κείμενο και να καταλάβει το νόημά τους, ενώ παράλληλα συνεχίζεις να αναπνέεις, να έχεις σφυγμό, να ανοιγοκλείνεις τα μάτια σου όταν χρειάζεται, χωρίς να καταβάλλεις καμία -συνειδητή- προσπάθεια.
Το ασυνείδητο έχει τεράστια σημασία για την επιβίωσή μας: Θα κάνει ότι μπορεί για να μας προστατέψει, με τον πιο αποτελεσματικό τρόπο που μπορεί.´«Ετσι πχ, δε χρειάζεται να υπολογίσουμε την ταχύτητα, την κατεύθυνση και την απόσταση ενός αυτοκινήτου που τρέχει προς το μέρος μας για να αποφασίσουμε να το αποφύγουμε: το ασυνείδητο λειτουργεί ενστικτωδώς, γρήγορα και αποτελεσματικά, και μας κάνει να τρέξουμε μακριά. Και αυτό σημαίνει ότι μερικές φορές μπορεί να μας δημιουργήσει προβλήματα στην καθημερινότητά μας. Το ασυνείδητο δε λειτουργεί με κριτήριο τις κοινωνικές συνθήκες και το τί είναι προτιμότερο για μας, αλλά με κριτήριο τί είναι πιο αποτελεσματικό για να μας κρατήσει ζωντανούς και ασφαλείς. Για παράδειγμα, συχνά μια δυσάρεστη ή τραυματική εμπειρία είναι αρκετή για να μας δημιουργήσει μια φοβία ή ένα άγχος που μας διαλύει και μας εμποδίζει να λειτουργήσουμε, "προστατεύοντάς" μας έτσι από το να ξαναβιώσουμε τη σχετική εμπειρία ή να βρεθούμε σε κίνδυνο, σε βάρος του να ζούμε μια ζωή χωρίς άγχος ή φόβο.

Είναι λογικό ότι ένας άνθρωπος που έχει τα παραπάνω, ακόμη και σε μικρό βαθμό, μπορεί να βιώσει την εμπειρία της ύπνωσης χωρίς δυσκολία. Από την άλλη, είναι πρακτικά αδύνατο να υπνωτιστεί κανείς χωρίς τη θέλησή του. Η μακρόχρονη εμπειρία δείχνει ότι συνήθως οι άνθρωποι που δυσκολεύονται είναι αυτοί που έχουν λάθος πληροφόρηση για την ύπνωση, και άρα είναι διστακτικοί ή φοβισμένοι. Ένας καλός υπνοθεραπευτής θα λύσει πρώτα τις τυχόν απορίες και φόβους σχετικά με την ύπνωση, πριν προχωρήσει.
